The Key of the 1970's Jazz
In 1970's, main stream Jazz was 'Jazz-Rock'. Young players on 'Bitches Brew' made 'Jazz-Rock' group. All players played 'Jazz-Rock'.
But, We don't know how many works were successful.
Wayne Shorter was main player of Miles Davis from 1965. After 'Bitches Brew', He joined Joe Zawinul's 'Weather Report'. They could play another 'Bitches Brew' in 1971. But, Their music had to be changed to 'Jazz-Rock'. Herbie Hancock was main pianist of Miles Davis on 1960's. He tried Funk style Jazz-Rock. He is a major leader after 'Miles Age'. Chick Corea's 'Return To Forever' also was 'Jazz-Rock' band in this 1970's age. They were the future of Jazz.
But, History didn't give high value to their albums. Even, They have got the best famous albums each others in this age. Of cause I have got those, and I guess surely many Jazz mania have got those. But, I wonder about those albums are worth to listen.
The Key of this 1970's Jazz is John McLaughlin. They couldn't got great guitarist at their band. and they couldn't compose like 'John McLaughlin'. and Jazz-Rock needed great guitarist and great composer.
'Mahavishnu Orchestra' is Jazz-Rock Band not 'Orchestra'. This band have got violinist Jerry Goodman, and Jan Hammer(keyboard), Billy Cobham(drums) were members of this group until 1973. 'Mahavishnu Orchestra' didn't loose much sound though John McLaughlin lost best session. But, Jan Hammer was only one keyboard player who can play with John McLaughlin's guitar.
I guess Jan Hammer doesn't have any remarkable albums. But, Drummer Billy Cobham became major band leader after 'Mahavishnu Orchestra'.
There are many members in Cobham's band. Guitarist John Abercrombie or John Scofield. and especially, Michael Brecker was in there. He is a famous saxophone player of 1990's Jazz. What I know is Billy Cobham have got many albums which have got good ratings on 'All Music' site for 1970's and recent 15 years. I don't know what he doing.
Such as many Jazz listeners, I like tradition Jazz, moreover I like comfortable Jazz. But, Many people want to know about today's Jazz. Someone can say, 'Jazz lost their way' or 'Jazz dead'. But, In fact, 'Jazz-Rock' is wrong. This means, That's not Jazz. So, 'Rock-Jazz' is right.
'Mahavishnu Orchestra' is a great Jazz music. Traditional Jazz, But It's hard to interested in as just Jazz. Problems is Jazz musicians are amazing at playing but, Basically, they are not composer and not studio engineer. But, I think. There are cool Jazz music somewhere. Because, Jazz can be any music, any kind of music Jazz is possible.
I didn't interested in Jazz for many years. But, I heard a band played some minimal style playing on a radio streaming many years ago. Miles Davis's 'Bitches Brew' and 'Mahavishnu Orchestra', Always, will be modern. Something new Jazz will come out from them with new cloth, with new playing.
